Man stabbed several times in street attack
05 November 2008

A MAN escaped with his life after being stabbed in the early hours of Monday.

The 20-year-old was recovering in hospital this week after being stabbed in Durham Road, at the junction with Seven Sisters Road, Holloway, just after midnight. He was taken to hospital with several knife wounds.

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers were called to the scene by London Ambulance Service at 12.08am. The 20-year-old man was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition. He is now in a serious but stable condition.”

An 18-year-old man was arrested on Monday and taken into custody in a police station in central London. He has since been bailed to return to the police station in mid December, ending further inquiries.

Residents say they often see groups of young men roaming the area, sometimes with baseball bats.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “I wouldn’t come down here at night. I’ve seen people with baseball bats fighting at the top of Durham Road before. My son was nearly mugged here but a police patrol came past and scared them off.”

Nimao Mohammed, 28, who lives nearby, said: “Once it’s dark I don’t like to go out. There are a lot of groups of boys in hoodies around here, particularly in that road. I always see a lot of police around here but it doesn’t make me feel any safer. They should open more youth clubs for them to stop them hanging around, and get these kids to do more with their lives.”

Another resident said: “My next-door neighbour was murdered about four or five years ago – living here is the worst nightmare you can get. I’ve been mugged twice before and I never feel safe here. There are so many drug dealers. It’s frightening.”

Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to call Islington CID on 020 7421 0185.
