A fire which destroyed the basement of a disused hotel in Finsbury Park was likely to have been caused by a discarded cigarette.

It took more than 40 firefighters almost two hours to bring the blaze at the Spring Park Hotel in Seven Sisters Road under control.

Firefighters were called to the hotel at 7.40pm on Sunday when fire broke out in the basement.

The four-storey building has been boarded up for more than six months but has been occupied by squatters.

A spokesman for Hackney Police said: “The cause is believed to be a discarded cigarette by squatters.”

It is the second time in five months that a fire has broken out at the former hotel. Four men were rescued by firefighters when a fire broke out at the hotel last August.

FIRE gutted a hotel overlooking Finsbury Park for the second time in a year.

The Spring Park Hotel in Seven Sister’s Road has been left a shell by the blaze that erupted just after 7.30pm on Sunday night.

It took dozens of firefighters almost two hours to control the flames as smoke and sparks plumed into the night.

Eyewitness Tony Hardiman said: “Police closed Seven Sisters Road to northbound traffic between Manor House and Stroud Green Road while firefighters tackled the blaze. There were fears people were inside and ambulances were on standby. It is the second blaze to hit the hotel in months.”

The joint owner of another hotel in the road, who did not give her name, said: “My brother rang me to say it had started because the road was closed. There were lots of fire engines and it started in the basement.”

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said: “Eight fire engines and around 40 firefighters were called to a disused hotel in Seven Sisters Road. Half of the basement was damaged by the blaze and there was heavy smoke throughout the three-storey building.”

He added: “The brigade was called at 7.38pm and the fire was under control by 9.15pm. Firefighters from Stoke Newington and surrounding fire stations attended the incident. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Lets hope they pull it down now. There’s too many of these crappy DSS hotels in the area anyway.
