Boris announces more cops at more stations

Outer London is set to see a major increase in policing at transport hubs.

Key routes in the suburbs will get by 50 extra officers hitting 100 stations to tackle crime on the network, Mayor Boris Johnson has announced.

Transport for London’s £6 million crime offensive will see British Transport Police teams backed up by security staff and ticket inspectors from the train operating companies.

Areas like Croydon, Wimbledon, Acton, Bromely, Stratford, Finsbury Park and Seven Sisters will benefit by the extra patrols.

Johnson said:

“During the election campaign I made a pledge that I would make London’s suburban stations safer, because everyone has the right to travel safely and free from the fear of crime, no matter what part of London they live in,” the mayor said.
‘Greater reassurance’

Michael Roberts, chief executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies, said:

“While crime across the London network is now low and continues to fall, the mayor’s initiative will provide even greater reassurance to passengers.”
Election issue

Today’s announcement came after several high-profile incidents on outer London rail stations that were outside the control of TfL and left unmanned by many train companies.

The issue came to the boil when city lawyer Thomas ap Rhys Pryce was murdered after leaving the unmanned Kensal Green station in January 2006. Attempts were made to tackle the by piping in classical music to keep troublemakers away and some stations were finally manned by one or two train company staff.

Security, safety and reassurance on the suburb stations became an important plank in Boris Johnson’s ‘Quality of Life’ programme.
