ESTATE PLAN IN JEOPARDY
04 March 2009
Serious doubts have been raised about the long-term viability of a £1billion masterplan to transform a crumbling housing estate.
Hackney Council has gone cap in hand to the newly-created government body, the Homes & Community Agency (HCA), for a £16million rescue package to kickstart the flagship Woodberry Down regeneration project.
The HCA grant will allow the council’s partner, the developer Berkeley Homes, to build 117 social rented homes on the Old School site of the sprawling housing estate.
But opposition parties have questioned whether the grant will be enough to revive the project in the north-west of the borough as the economic situation continues to nosedive.
